Regarding hybridization of animals, such as ligers (lions + tigers) and mules (horses + donkeys)....?

The two species HAVE to have the same number of chromozomes, and they have to have the same gestation period among other things. It won't work otherwise. That's why you don't get cow/horse hybrids.
