Does 8mm film need to be developed before play back?

I recently purchased a Super 8 Camera and a 8mm film projector. I am completely new to this genre so bare with me. Does the film need to be developed or processed before loading it into the projector? I don't want to mess up the film by exposing it to light if I am not supposed to. So any help on this matter would be great!
